Where we are: Moneglia |
|
 |
Named for the first time in
the so-named “Tavola Peuntigeriana”, the first
road map of the Roman Empire with the name of
“Ad Monilia”, Moneglia has very ancient origins
and a history that influenced all the
surrounding area. Dominated by the two castles
of Monleone and Villafranca, which defended the
town from sea raids, the old town is enclosed by
a valley covered by olive trees, which make
Moneglia one of the most |
|
renowned areas for the local production
of olive oil. The old town is cut into
two parts from a medieval “carruggio”
(the Ligurian name for street), which is
now the idea place to stroll around |
 |
among boutiques and typical
shops, with the possibility to visit the two
historical churches of the town: San Giorgio,
dating back to 1396 but renovated at the
beginning of the 18th Century, with its
Franciscan Cloister of the 14th Century; and the
Church of Santa Croce (Holy Church), built on an
old 11th Century-old parish church. Its name
comes from a Byzantine Crucifix which, the
legend says, was found on the beach after a |
|
shipwreck. Near the church there is the
“Disciplinants” Oratory, decorated by
frescoes. Thanks to the tunnel road
regulated by traffic lights, Moneglia is
reachable in few minutes from Deiva
Marina to the east and |
 |
Sestri Levante to the west,
from where it is possible to proceed to Santa
Margherita, Portofino and Genoa, 2004 European
Capital City of Culture. Not to miss are the
several footpaths connecting Moneglia with the
surrounding hamlets, with its breathtaking views,
the smells of the Mediterranean vegetation and,
from far, the view over the sea, which got a lot
of times the “Blue Flag”, the European
Certification for clean waters. |
